17-DMAG (17-Dimethylaminoethylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin) is a synthetic derivative of the antibiotic geldanamycin. It belongs to the class of compounds known as Hsp90 (heat shock protein 90) inhibitors. Heat shock proteins, including Hsp90, play a role in cellular processes and are involved in the folding and stabilization of other proteins, known as client proteins.

The primary function of 17-DMAG is to inhibit the activity of Hsp90, leading to the degradation of client proteins that are dependent on Hsp90 for stability. Many of these client proteins are involved in signaling pathways and cellular processes associated with cancer, making 17-DMAG a valuable compound in cancer research.
